This Month: Margaret Hurley

Q. When did you first start riding?
I started riding approximately at the age of 30. I have many “school” horses to thank.

Q. Tell us a little about your horse(s)?
I have a wonderful Russian Warmblood named Tchaikovsky. His grandsire was a gift from the Russian (Communist) government between their Secretary of State to ours.

Q. How did you become interested in Dressage?
I broke too many bones in Eventing and Fox hunting.

Q. What are your goals?
To do any level well. If you think about it, if you can master Traning level well, really well, with perfect bends, straight lines and on the bit with throughness the other levels are just icing on the cake.

Q. Where do you keep your horse?
      Pebble Beach Equestrian Center

Q. Do you train with anyone? If yes, who?
No, not with anyone at this time. My last trainer was Katie Hoefs, also a SFP member, who taught me a lot! Thank you Katie!
Other trainers have included Brian Sabo, Shelly Lawder, Kamila duPont.

Q. Do you show?
Occasionally. But, I’m usually working behind the scene, scribing, etc.

Q. What is your regular "day job"?
I’m a Real Estate Broker with Alain Pinel in Carmel. I also like to remodel fixer uppers and build houses.

Q. How do you fit riding into your schedule?
I make time every day. It may be only 30 minutes to an hour…or on a good day, a couple of hours and a trail ride to the beach. My horse is my sanity!

Q. Is your husband/partner/family supportive of your riding?
       Of course.

Q. Outside of riding, what other hobbies or sports do you enjoy?
Anything to do with nature. I’m fortunate enough to live in what I think is the most beautiful spot on Earth. I try to incorporate that into my day.
